Well…you are in the middle of Pats country. I think rooting for any team other than the Patriots would put you in the crosshairs. The Bills’ recent records have provided plenty of opportunity to tease. But take heart: you utterly destroyed one of the best defenses in the league on Sunday and are going into a game with a compromised Packers team next Sunday. Josh Allen looks more and more like the real deal. Things look good for the Bills.

I have a rash what should I do?

You should go to University Health Services if the source of the rash is unknown or the symptoms are severe. Many rashes go away if the area is kept clean, dry and free of chemicals and cosmetics, but if the rash doesn’t improve, definitely see UHS. Oh, and don’t scratch it -that can cause infections or spread the rash.

It isn’t necessarily more expensive than staying at BC; please talk to the OIP Scholarship Advisor (bit.ly/BCAbroadFinances) before you decide it’s not possible for you.

Human interaction is hard! You could gently confront him/her, or you could reciprocate the look-away. Your choice; the former is braver, and if s/he is just shy or unsure of what to say to you, may lead to getting to know each other better. One more thought – it’s also possible s/he didn’t recognize you; prosopagnosia (faceblindness) is a very real thing.

Could someone effectively use a swordfish as a weapon?

While it may be difficult to use a whole swordfish as a weapon, people have used the swordfish sword or bill effectively as a weapon. See a recent academic article about penetrating chest injuries using a swordfish sword (http://bit.ly/swordfishweapon). Also, in 2010, a couple of Australian men had a drunken fight in which one used a swordfish bill as a weapon (http://bit.ly/swordfishbillweapon).

A piece of advice regarding a famous american novel I could read? Thanks

The best piece of advice would be to read more than one! There are many lists of best American novels available online. Some favorites that seem to show up on most of the lists are “To Kill a Mockingbird” (PS3562 .E353 T6 1960), “The Great Gatsby” (PS3511 .I9 G74 1980Z), “The Grapes of Wrath” (PS3537 T3234 G8 1989), “Beloved” (available online), and “Invisible Man” (PS3555 .L625 .I5 1995). Happy reading!

How do I learn to be more confident?!

How do I learn to be more confident?!
How do I learn to be more confident?!

“Confidence” derives from the Latin fidere, to trust, so self-confidence = to trust and have faith in yourself. First make sure you take care of yourself: eat right, get enough sleep, get some exercise, comb your hair in the morning. Think about your strengths and what you have achieved in the past. Then think about how you can use your strengths to accomplish some of your goals. To get yourself going, start with smaller goals (take a yoga class; throw a small party; talk to that cute person who sits next to you in class). The more you succeed, the more self-confident you will become. If something doesn’t work out, learn from it and try a different strategy. If you’re ever at the point where it’s all too much though, Counseling Services (bit.ly/BC-counseling) can be of help. I know I have faith in you (and you should too)! <3 <3 <3

Do you speak Tagalog? -Ako Walang Pera 🙁 –

Though I don’t speak Tagalog myself, I have a huge network of expert linguists at the ready. I’m sorry you’re having financial woes, especially so early in the semester! I recommend finding an understanding ear (perhaps at AHANA: bit.ly/BC-BAIC) and setting up a meeting with a financial counselor (bit.ly/BC-fin-aid). Once you’ve found better financial footing, it might help to learn more about financial literacy: bit.ly/BCSuccessfulStart. Kaya mo ‘yan!

Then it’s a really good thing that in college you have a bunch of different assignments (essays, readings, discussions, papers, projects, etc.) and not homework! 🙂 Seriously, there’s a lot more work to do in the college setting and you will need to be able to figure out how best you can address it all. The Connors Family Learning Center (bit.ly/BC-connors) has lots of great resources to add to that cuteness so you can do the best you can. P.S. I actually think all of the students who pass by me are kinda cute. <3 <3 <3

For being more analytical: Thinking Fast and Slow, by Daniel Kahneman (O’Neill Library BF441 .K238 2011). For reading: How to Read a Book, by Mortimer J. Adler (O’Neill Library & Theology & Ministry Library PN83 .A43 1972) For other, more practical recommendations, I’d advise a visit to the Academic Coach at the Connors Family Learning Center: bit.ly/BC-connors
