I’ll have my assistants check and get back to you.

The details are here under “Degrees with honors”( bit.ly/NewBCHonors ): For 2020: summa for the top 4.5% of the class, magna for the next 9.5%, and cum laude for the next 15% (at the end of 2nd semester senior year.) In 2021: Summa for GPA of 3.9–4.0, magna for 3.8–3.899, cum laude for 3.667–3.799.

Why is BC ignoring the importance of art?

I can’t speak BC’s valuation of the art program, but the libraries encourage art displays and frequently host artistic and educational exhibits. All of the BC Libraries have exhibit spaces. Check out the “Trapped In The Middle” photo exhibit showing now at both O’Neill and the SWL, and the colorful Alfred Manessier print exhibit at the TML. In O’Neill, students can display art on the first floor, and proposals are welcome for use of other spaces. Did you see the ceramics exhibit in the lobby last fall?

I want to learn GIS and how to use it. Does BC have resources for this?

Unfortunately we don’t have any GIS sessions happening this semester. But you can always learn more on the Data LibGuide: library.bc.edu/dataservices. If you click the “Get Help” link on the left side of the page, you can make an appointment with one of our two data librarians. They’ll walk you through getting started and talk to you about some of the different options you have to learn more.

Dominus Vobiscum …

V/Dominus Vobiscum R/ Et cum spiritu Tuum!!! V/Sursum Corda. R/c

For those not as well-versed in Latin: The Lord be with you. And with your spirit!!! Lift up your hearts. These are common phrases in the liturgy of the Christian church, dating back to the earliest periods of the church, and quite familiar to any Catholics accustomed to hearing the Mass in Latin.

Here’s a quick explanation of the Preface Liturgy (it comes before communion) in the Catholic mass, for those unfamiliar with it: bit.ly/preface-dialogue. For a deeper dive, here are 700 books on the history of the Catholic liturgy: bit.ly/BC-catholic-liturgy

WOW! Where can I find Latin Mass on campus?
WOW! Where can I find Latin Mass on campus?

Latin Mass is a relative rarity in the Church today. The only Latin Mass on campus these days is conducted in St. Joseph’s Chapel on upper campus Fridays at noon. See the full Mass Schedule at BC at http://bit.ly/MassBC. There is also a Latin Mass conducted at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston at 10AM on Sundays.

Latin Mass is also held in St. Joe's on Wednesdays @ noon!

I’m sorry I missed that! Can you speak to whomever runs the calendar of Mass at BC and have them add that? There’s currently no Latin Mass listed on Wednesdays. 🙁

Why Is BC a white-student school?

Why Is BC a white-student school?; Is BC a racist school at all? :(
Why Is BC a white-student school?; Is BC a racist school at all? 🙁

It sounds like you’ve had a bad experience here, and I’m sorry about that. A core Jesuit value is “cura personalis,” care for the person. If you’ve been subjected to racism you’ve felt the pain of that value failing you. Another core Jesuit value, Magis, involves striving to be better. To be better, we have to examine the places where we fail. BC is a school with thousands of people, each with their own feelings and experiences about race. It is likely there are individuals at BC who are racist. It is also likely that others participate unwittingly in structural racism. We all need to examine our own behaviors and rise to the challenge of caring for each other more mindfully.

I did answer, but sometimes the little post-its go off and hide! You can always see my answers on my blog: https://library.bc.edu/answerwall/. The answer was: 12/11/19 from Campus Rec: “Campus Recreation allows community members to purchase memberships during the Summer, but not during the academic year. We keep the facility foot traffic during the semester to the students and faculty/staff that are directly affiliated with BC.”

You are absolutely not stupid. You’d be surprised at how many students struggle (many!) Please check in with you professors, your advisor, and the Connors Family Learning Center (bit.ly/BC-connors). There’s advice and tutoring and support. And thanks for the birthday wishes.

Should I write a thesis?

Should I write a thesis? (Studying philosophy + biology B.A.)

Some questions to ask yourself: is there a topic you’d really like to investigate in depth? do you have the time in your schedule senior year to do this and do it well? are you planning on graduate school or a job in academia? Being able to point to a well-executed and written thesis, gives you an advantage. Also, talk with your major advisors about this.

I hope second semester is treating you well because it sure is not treating me well!

I recommend meeting with a health coach at the Office for Health Promotion. The staff there will be able to help you establish and maintain a healthier lifestyle that fits your needs. Although taking an hour out of your day can seem like a nuisance, talking to a health professional can give you strategies to lose weight and keep it off (if that’s what you need) through personalized assessments. They can also help you figure out other ways to be happier and healthier! bit.ly/BC-health-promo

I think I’m over my fear of nuns!

I think I'm over my fear of nuns! I talked to one today, glad she didn't eat me! =)
I think I’m over my fear of nuns! I talked to one today, glad she didn’t eat me! =)

Sceniscophobia is a thing, but an irrational one. Nuns are much much more likely to feed you or teach you something than do anything scary, and BC is a great place to meet them. Western nuns don’t wear the habit since Vatican II, but Asian and African ones often do, and there are lots around campus.

Actually, lots of Western nuns do wear habits! :) Sisters of Life, some Dominicans, Salesians, Benedictines ... tons!

Ha! That’s excellent. I did not know that, and I’ll remind my helper to check their facts a little more closely.

If this is a new problem, I’d suggest getting your vision checked. Otherwise, Academic Coaching from the Connors Family Learning Center (bit.ly/BC-connors) can help you develop skills and learn to better use your time so you get more (or all) of your reading done.

How do I let a guy know I like him

How do I let a guy know I like him
How do I let a guy know I like him

Men are baffling. Capable both of interpreting any possible hint as interest and of missing the most obvious signs. Ultimately you’re going to have to tell him and see how he responds. If you’ve been just hanging out, maybe invite him on something that is unmistakably a date?
