Can I “check out” a book from the collection in Gasson Commons?
One of my helpers had a chat with Maureen Burke in the Dean’s Office (Gasson 103), and she said that while there’s no policy about this, if you want to take out a book, just bring it to the office and she will OK it. However, I should add that the Gasson Commons is currently closed until the 16th.
It’s going to be a market, but there will also be a pop-up kitchen. The walls down there are way busier than usual, but I’ll see if I can get some more details out of them–and I’ll post here if I learn more.
I appreciate your feedback! The Library is currently collecting users’ input through a one-question survey to help determine the type of space the 5th floor study room would be (Here’s the survey: bit.ly/bc-new-study-survey). I will route your comment to the Library Administration for their consideration.
I’m having a hard time @ BC right now-with classes, friends, clubs, & social life. Any advice? Also, how does everyone seem so put together? (Response: Do your work right after class, use a calendar, start projects/ studying papers 1 week before Don’t feel like you’re not allowed to take a break from the BC bubble once and a while
BC culture puts a high value on seeming like you have everything together, all the time. Almost no-one does, and, if you look at what your peers post to me, you’ll see there are a lot of hidden problems. But BC also has a lot of various types of help available to you, and I hope you take advantage: CFLC for peer tutoring (bit.ly/BC-connors), University Counseling to discuss having a hard time with everything (bit.ly/BC-counseling).
Is the new room on the 5th floor designed quiet study? Cause people are SO LOUD.
I am sorry to hear that the noise level at the 5th floor is disruptive. I will convey your feedback to the Library administration. Also, the room’s current setup is not permanent, and your feedback will helps us determine what kind of layout will best serve the needs of our constituents!
Know of any sources/chats to get into contact with other BC students who are looking for off-campus housing? I have a group of 4 friends selected for next year but I am studying abroad my spring semester next year. I’m looking for someone to replace me, yet I don’t know where to look!
ResLife has a database for that! bit.ly/BCNeedRoomie and click on “search for roommates.”
Rat Sighting: 4th Floor between shelves PL/KF-GROSS! (sad face)
It’s the time of year when small outdoor creatures move to warmer winter options, so it’s inevitable there may be a few sightings. Thanks for alerting us. I’m sorry you had this confrontation. The library has traps set and exterminators in the building daily, so it should be a rare occurrence.
I’m not in a position to make judgments on others’ life decisions, but there are regularly groups of students smoking clustered right outside the entrance to the library, and this affects me negatively. Can this be regulated so they are farther away from the entrance?
I’m sorry you have had to experience that. Secondhand smoke is a genuine health issue. Boston College policy: “Smoking is… prohibited outdoors within twenty-five feet of all campus buildings.” Library staff will look into ways to communicate this policy effectively.
Can non BC people use the library? If so how/why when where etc.
Yes! We welcome visitors from everywhere. You can browse and read our books here, use our guest computers to access most of our electronic journals and databases, get research help at the Reference Desk, ask The Answer Wall (me) anything, and if you want you can pay to get a card to check out books. More info on guest access: bit.ly/BCLibGuest.
Do you mean the mailroom on the 2nd floor of O’Neill? Unfortunately, that’s limited only to official deliveries to and from the Library. There is a mailroom in McElroy that anyone is allowed to send mail and packages out of (http://bit.ly/BCMailRoom).
Can I put my personal book collection in the empty 4th floor bookcases
Alas, not. Staff are busy shifting library collections so those empty shelves will not remain available for long. If you do need a place to store your books, check-in with staff at the 3rd Floor Circulation Desk and ask about registering for a locker. We still have a small number up for grabs.
Why our dorms can be broken in by RAs??? A invasion of privacy and property rights
My assistants are looking into this and will respond when they receive an answer. My assistants are looking into this and will respond when they receive an answer. Update: 10/16/19 From Office of Res Life: “Health and fire safety inspections are the main reason a student room would be keyed into. These are always performed in tandem with a graduate or professional staff member (resident director) and an RA. Additionally, if there is a health or safety concern, RAs in consultation with a professional staff member may key into a room to ensure the community safety. For example, if they smell something burning behind a door and no one is home or answers.” If you think a situation arose that was outside of these bounds, please speak to someone in Res Life: bit.ly/res-life.
Why didn’t BC send out a notice about a peeping tom on campus? I found out from the news and that is unacceptable that we weren’t notified

Update 10/25/19 from BCPD: “When a crime on or near the campus is reported, BCPD promptly assesses the potential danger or threat it presents to the campus community or a portion thereof in an effort to determine whether or not an immediate threat exists, which would result in a timely notification. Many times, incidents are isolated to specific areas, and a community awareness bulletin is issued and disseminated to the affected area.”
Where is the most comfortable place in O’Neill for a nap? Really need a suggestion. Thanks!
How about one of the cushy chairs near the windows on level 5? One of the booths in the reading room or level 1 might work too. Then there’s also “The Spot” on level 4.
