Answering questions at Boston College O’Neill Library

To be honest, I don’t have a family portrait. We walls all take our jobs very seriously so never have the opportunity to get together. (Can you imagine what would happen if we took off for a family reunion?!) Except for those I am closest to I don’t really see my BC relatives wall-to-wall. This brief clip, however, shows some of the family on the outside: bit.ly/BCaerial. They are quite elegant, aren’t they?

You could start with US News & World Report rankings of Latin American History programs: bit.ly/grad-lat-am, but even better, because grad school quality is all about which scholars are where, would be conversations with Hispanic Studies faculty here at BC: bit.ly/BC-hispanic-studies. I’m sure they know the inside scoop about who’s where, where fellowship & TA-ship stipends are available, and which programs are growing & which shrinking.

IDK, but maybe you can submit this observation to dining services (bit.ly/BCDiningComment) and prompt a friendly rivalry between Lyons and Lower kitchen staffs: who’s got the best oatmeal?

No. The aims of modern feminism, judging by the 3,420 results in a catalog search using “feminism” as a subject (bit.ly/BCLIB-feminism), cannot be summed up so briefly.

It is sad that we are still reflecting on that question and I wish I could provide the one and perfect answer. Perhaps the best advice for us all is found in the song (bit.ly/whereisthelove2016): “Take control of your mind, just meditate And let your soul just gravitate to the love So the whole world celebrate it” <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3

Though I am certainly many things, I must admit that I am far from omnipotent. When it comes to influencing BC’s Dining Services, I am quite certain the collective voices of disgruntled students have far more sway than my own humble requests. Please make your collective wishes known directly to Dining Services: bit.ly/BCDiningComment

The start of the fall semester, while very exciting, can also be exhausting! If you’ve covered the bases (eating well, exercising regularly, getting at least 7 hours of sleep – all so easy to do in college, right?), and feel you’re still fatigued, maybe visit University Health Services (bit.ly/BostonCollegeHealth). Also check out options with Ofc. of Health Promotion (bit.ly/BC-health-promo)

Close by, I understand Lee’s Burgers, with locations in both Newton Centre and Coolidge Corner, (www.leesburger.com) has tasty burgers that are reasonably priced.

I know many things, and one thing I know is that your math and econ professors will have considerably better advice than I would about academic careers in those fields. Talk to all of them. Meanwhile, check this title: Complexities: Women in Mathematics, by Bettye Anne Case & Anne M Leggett. (O’Neill QA27.5 .C66 2005)

I’m sorry you feel mistreated by BC. I recommend bringing your grievances to the relevant offices: for housing, Residential Life – bit.ly/res-life, and for clubs, Office of Student Involvement – bc.edu/osi. You belong here.

Will capitalism last in its current form forever? Unlikely, given that in terms of human history it’s relatively new. So, yes, it’s doomed… but only in the same sense that we’re all doomed. I will not, alas!, stand forever. Even the famous walls: The Great Wall, Hadrian’s Wall, the Wailing Wall… will eventually be gone, and new walls built. For a more detailed criticism of the current state of capitalism, I recommend the recent instant classic Capital in the Twenty-First Century, by Thomas Piketty, currently on reserve at O’Neill, and in the general collection at the Law Library: HB501 .P43613 2014.
