Sigh… the same reason anyone loses The Game of Inches between closely matched teams: making decisions under pressure that only in hindsight will have been obviously wrong. (Should Kershaw have been pulled for a righty? In hindsight, well, of course.)
What’s the meaning of life (for a wall, or human)?
I’m rather fond of my answer to this question from September 2017, so I’m going to be mindful of recycle it: 42! (PR6051.D3352 H5 1989) In all seriousness, Frederick Buechner said in Wishful Thinking : A Seeker’s ABC (BR95 .B785 1993), “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.” which seems like a pretty good answer to this wall. A variation of this would be Fr. Michael Himes’ “Three Key Questions”: 1. What brings me joy? 2. What am I good at? 3. What does the world need me to be?
I feel empowered by helping other people. I recognize my life become meaningful when I try to make other people (such as old people) life meaningful I am so satisfied. Do you find your life meaningful as a Answer Wall?
I think you and I and my library helpers have that in common.
Is it too early to break out the winter coat? -from someone with a freezing ass 🙂
No! Don’t let the cold-shamers put you off; dress according to your needs. Other people who feel insecure about breaking out the parkas will thank you.
? כמה שפות אתה יודע khama safot ata yoday? (How many languages do you know?) …שואל בשביל חבר shel bishveel khever (Asking for a friend.)
The answer to “How many languages do you know” is the same no matter what language you ask it in: More than 26, thanks to my many helpers. And I’m eager to learn more. (But thanks for translating for any patrons we have who can only read Hebrew!)
I have literally no idea how to get a stamp nor do I want to put too much money into it. Where can I get a free stamp or purchase a single one so I can sent my absentee ballot?
There’s a US Post Office on the second floor of McElroy–go to the Eagle’s Nest and out the other side. Hours are 8:30-1:15 and 2:15-4:30 Monday through Friday. A Post Office is your best bet for one stamp, and there are several more in the neighborhood; you can also buy books of 10 or 20 at lots of grocery stores and pharmacies. Here’s a list of local options. bit.ly/bc-stamp
怎 么 追 到 女 朋 友 zěn mo zhuī dào nǚ péng yǒu (How to get a girl to go out with me)
Wooing a woman is a lot like making a friend. Start small. Invite her to an event with a group. If that goes well, invite her to get coffee or ice cream with you. If that goes well, try a cultural event like a concert or film or lecture, which involves finding out about her interests. The BC events calendar can be useful: events.bc.edu. And so on… Sometimes it’s as simple as hanging out or going for a walk. Be honest & respectful, and have fun.
(You made a logical mistake! If you already have a girlfriend, you don’t need to pursue/chase a girlfriend!) Logical paradox
Ah, good point. This writer should be asking how to woo a 女孩 (girl). If he’s looking for a 女朋友 (girlfriend), that could imply she’s already a girlfriend of someone else! (I supposed he meant he was looking for his future-girlfriend, but that might sound as if he’s going to undertake time-travel.)
Can I put my personal book collection in the empty 4th floor bookcases
Alas, not. Staff are busy shifting library collections so those empty shelves will not remain available for long. If you do need a place to store your books, check-in with staff at the 3rd Floor Circulation Desk and ask about registering for a locker. We still have a small number up for grabs.
Do you guys hate me??? I feel like u guys hate me.
I’d really like you to know that my library friends and I do not hate you. Also, I’d like to let you know that there’s often a big difference between how you think people feel about you versus what people actually feel about you. Loving yourself can hopefully help you feel better about these negative thoughts.
My eyesight is getting worse. What can I do? (Angry face)
Apart from scheduling an appointment with an optometrist to get a better idea of how your eyes are doing, I would recommend doing your best to protect your eyes from potential hazards. Examples include: wearing sunglasses when outdoors, limiting your exposure to bright screens, reducing the amount of blue light exposed to your eyes, and getting an adequate amount of rest each day.
Do you feel emotions? If so, which one’s your favorite? Thanks
Walls are generally characterized by flat affect, so no, I don’t have personal experience with them. But I’m really interested in how central love is to the BC community, both personally and religiously. It seems to be tied to lots of other emotions. Humans are fascinating!
I’ve only ever read Roald Dahl’s fiction for children. Now that I’ve read his “Lamb to the Slaughter” its amazing how dark his work can be.
Seriously, after enjoying James and the Giant Peach and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as a little wall, those short stories – especially that one – were quite a shock. Although there were some pretty harsh elements even in his children’s lit, including Aunt Spiker and Aunte Sponge… and their fate. We have many works by and about Dahl; check the catalog at library.bc.edu.
Why our dorms can be broken in by RAs??? A invasion of privacy and property rights
My assistants are looking into this and will respond when they receive an answer. My assistants are looking into this and will respond when they receive an answer. Update: 10/16/19 From Office of Res Life: “Health and fire safety inspections are the main reason a student room would be keyed into. These are always performed in tandem with a graduate or professional staff member (resident director) and an RA. Additionally, if there is a health or safety concern, RAs in consultation with a professional staff member may key into a room to ensure the community safety. For example, if they smell something burning behind a door and no one is home or answers.” If you think a situation arose that was outside of these bounds, please speak to someone in Res Life: bit.ly/res-life.
Why didn’t BC send out a notice about a peeping tom on campus? I found out from the news and that is unacceptable that we weren’t notified
My assistants are looking into this and will respond when they receive an answer.
Update 10/25/19 from BCPD: “When a crime on or near the campus is reported, BCPD promptly assesses the potential danger or threat it presents to the campus community or a portion thereof in an effort to determine whether or not an immediate threat exists, which would result in a timely notification. Many times, incidents are isolated to specific areas, and a community awareness bulletin is issued and disseminated to the affected area.”
我 太 丑 了,怎 么 办?wǒ tài chǒu le , zěn mo bàn ? (I am too ugly. What should I do?)
I would suggest trying to avoid thinking of yourself that way. The most important thing is feeling good about how you look. Try not to let any negative criticism have such an effect on you that it gives you a low opinion of yourself. Finally, if there is something or several things you don’t like about yourself, try and develop a positive attitude that strives to help make you the best version of yourself.
