Please don’t tell me the text I just saw about BC switching to online courses is real!

Dear Answer Wall: Please don't tell me the text I just saw about BC switching to online courses is real! I LOVE my classes so much, and not being able to have normal class would be VERY sad! It's honestly more detrimental to my mental health than the risk that the virus poses.

I think going to classes knowing me and the people I love might get the virus will be more detrimental to my mental health

we can't assume everyone has the proper immune system that can fight off the virus. It's best to take proper precaution to protect EVERYONE in the campus.

BC has made no announcement yet about switching to online courses. For BC updates straight from the source: bc.edu/coronavirus. I’m sorry to say that given the number of other major area institutions now going online (Harvard, Northeastern, BU), and the MA state of emergency, it’s likely that BC will as well. COVID-19 infection growth has been exponential. A steep curve will overwhelm hospitals unless people take actions (social distancing, hand-washing, etc.) to slow the curve. BC going online would achieve a lot of social distancing quickly, and can help protect the most vulnerable, as your respondents suggest. Timing is complicated by the fact that the beginning of an exponential curve is shallow, and gives the appearance of a minor problem, but if there is no response before it begins to accelerate, that’s a sure way to overwhelm hospitals. #FlattenTheCurve

Curve of pandemic infection showing two alternatives: a tall, curve labeled "cases without protective measures" that rises above the health care system capacity, or a lower curve labeled "cases with protective measures" that is below the health care system capacity

And as you now know, events surpassed the Answer Wall’s wisdom & knowledge, and BC is closing down classes and going online. #FlattenTheCurve

The virus is NOT just about YOU. Everyone on this campus is @ risk if there is a case. Just b/c we are young doesn't mean we'll survive. Many have anemia, asthma, etc. - conditions that you wouldn't know

about, who are threatened by this. People who are sick don't even bother to wear masks + some don't even wash their hands after using the bathroom! (EW) BC should be cancelling

classes to protect the community. In conclusion, you just sound ignorant + selfish!!

Well, I expected this would provoke some post-it, but not this much students' response.... Ooooops. I hope hope everyone, stay safe and healthy, and protect the venerable population/community as well, and I don't disagree w/ certain level of precaution. I hope y'all get the accommodations needed if you feel safer to not be in class. That being said, can we Don't panic and also be mindful of those who feel safer, healthier, and have more workable plan to remain on campus? so sad to see the email :( being sad doesn't mean I'm against anyone/ any decision :( :( :(

It’s impossible not to have mixed feelings about all of this. I feel great about all of the people who will be safer, but sad for all the upheaval in everyone’s lives. It’s just a very, very hard time. Take care of yourselves, be kind to your neighbors.
