how do I know when I’m being lied to?

You don’t. You can take it on faith if you trust the speaker or you can seek independant verification of the facts, if possible. Lie detectors, ways to evaluate people’s posture, eye movement, etc have been used, but are imperfect.

It’s a learning curve? You will have a better idea of what to avoid in the future.
