It’s to make it possible for people who can’t open the doors themselves to use all the same entrances as everyone else. BC is a tough campus for people with mobility issues, we want to make it a little easier.

Answering questions at Boston College O’Neill Library

Speak, for your lips are free;
Speak, your tongue is still yours,
Your upright body is yours–
Speak, your life is still yours.
See how in the blacksmith’s shop
The flames are hot, the iron is red,
Mouths of locks have begun to open,
Each chain’s embrace has spread wide.
Speak, this little time is plenty
Before the death of body and tongue:
Speak, for truth is still alive–
Speak, say whatever is to be said.
–Faiz Ahmed Faiz, translated by V.G. Kiernan (Poem was recited by the Indian actress & activist Shabana Azmi at the UN in 2009, regarding the treatment of women in Afghanistan.)

Boston College is a very good school, so you’ll at least have that as part of your overall profile. However, things like GPA, GRE, personal statement, and other “soft” factors are going to weigh much more heavily than the fact that you went to BC. Admissions requirements will vary between schools so you should determine what schools you’re interested in and get a feel for your chances of getting in. The Grad Cafe (thegradcafe.com) can provide you with some useful admissions data. Talk to your BC Econ professors, too, and don’t forget the BC Career Center: bit.ly/BC-career

According to the latest Factbook, at the end of fiscal year 2017, there were 2,326,205 books available from O’Neill Library. Defining what a “book” is gets kind of tricky (librarians love to nerd out on this stuff), but the oldest printed book in our collection is Jean Gerson’s De Spiritualib[us] Nupciis (On Spiritual Marriage). It has been digitized and is available to read online: bit.ly/BurnsOldestBook. The oldest item we have is a Mesopotamian clay tablet from 2000-3000 BC.

Maybe. There are many health benefits to owning a dog, including improved mental and physical health. Therapy dogs can provide similar de-stressing opportunities and the chance to focus on something other than yourself, however briefly. If you’re asking if they can absolve you of sin and cleanse your soul of that weight….it might better to talk to a member of the clergy.

The Catholic Church is committed to traditions. This is both a strength and a weakness. However, any institution as old as the Church that places such a high importance on tradition is going to have some vestiges of old (and unfair) power structures in place. It was (and to a large extent remains) the case that men held most positions of power in all areas of life throughout history – whether that was the church, politics (ignoring the inseparability of the two for a second), on down to the individual household.

IDK (nor do 240k+ YouTube commenters), but I think Ant Man being stuck in the quantum realm isn’t insignificant. No doubt the writers will think of a way to leave us all hanging again, though, so don’t get too wedded to getting all your questions answered. Yes, dope sword!

Oh, so sorry to hear that! But you asked why: If you’re going to get a concussion, “unintentional fall” is the likeliest cause, and it’s certainly easy to fall unintentionally while skating. I didn’t find stats on skating college students, but 13% of high schoolers who played sports in 2017 had suffered at least one concussion. (BC only: bit.ly/statista-concussions) So you, if you ask around, you’ll find you have a lot of company.

That would be sad, if it’s what your heart is set upon. On the other hand, having a math background will stand you in good stead in anything else you pursue. I recommend the MAA Career Resources Center (bit.ly/MathishCareers) and this site from UC/Irvine (bit.ly/MoreMathCareers). We also have 101 careers in mathematics (O’Neill Stacks QA10.5 .A15 2014). And consider a consultation with the BC Career Center (bit.ly/BC-career). Best of luck!

Unrequited love is hard. It’s the topic of so many artworks that it must also be quite common. IOW, you’re not alone in loving someone who doesn’t love you. Seek out poems, stories, and songs about unrequited love, wallow in your pain for a while, and then… gather your strength and move on. (Here are some poems to get you started: bit.ly/poems-unrequited). You’ll find someone you love who loves you back, I’m certain of it.

Potential husbands are all over the place. I recommend getting involved in activities or clubs where potential husbands congregate. Take up rock climbing at a climbing wall, say, or sign up for a writing workshop series at Grub Street, get involved in a politically active group… it all depends on your interests. Churches come to mind, too, as do charities. In short, do what interests you, in groups, and you will meet people with shared interests who might become friends and might even become romantic prospects.

I’m sorry you didn’t receive the service you were expecting at the CFLC. Please let them know the expectations you feel they didn’t meet, and they might be able to meet them. The only other service available in the School of Arts and Sciences is the Online Writing Lab (OWL), a service affiliated with CFLC (bit.ly/BC-OWL), but you’ll have to hurry! Today is the last day to submit. If you are in a different school (e.g. School of Social Work), ask that school’s main office whether there is an in-person or online tutoring service affiliated with that school.

It depends on the situation. Sometimes it’s hard because we’re having so much fun but we need to address other responsibilities (“I’m having so much fun at this party but I need to leave because I’m working in the morning.”) Sometimes it signals a huge change in our lives, e.g., when you graduate and move on to a whole new world. It’s scary to leave behind the safety and security of what you know and enter the unknown. And it’s sad because you’ll be leaving behind some people too. Change can be difficult, but change can also lead to new adventures and opportunities and growth. I’ll end with some wise words from A.A. Milne and Walt Disney that may help to provide some perspective. “How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” “Goodbye may seem forever. Farewell is like the end, but in my heart is the memory and there you will always be.”
