Title:
Sands of Time: The Autobiography of Dorothy Fudge
Description:
Sands of Time is the autobiography of Dorothy Fudge, a local woman from Dorset, England. This short autobiography spans five chapters, covering her home and childhood, school, father, work and play, marriage, war, and post-war. Born in 1907, Dorothy lived through a period of great change in England, and she gives a thorough account of both world wars as well as the interwar period, including the introduction of electricity to her village. Dorothy left school at thirteen to begin working, and she chronicles her various positions as a children’s nursemaid and parlormaid. Her narrative interweaves local and global events, moving from a bombing during WWII to a case of foot-and-mouth disease on a farm near her house within the span of a page. Photographs of family members, Dorothy’s wedding, and traditional practices accompany the various stories she shares.
