FedNews Issue 6 Item Info

Title:
FedNews Issue 6
Description:
This special edition of FedNews distinguishes itself by featuring works considered to have “bad English.” This issue’s emphasis on “bad English” is inclusive of different dialects, rejecting “Standard English” as the “language of power and authority in Britain.” As the opening paragraph of the Feditorial explains, “Standard English” may be seen as superior, but it is not the “first language of the majority of the population.” Works that push back against the authority of “good” English include “Yi Canny Talk Right,” in which Glasgow poet Tom Leonard talks about finding his own voice and “De Queen Hinglish,” which includes accounts from three Federation members on finding “their own language.” Cartoons, photographs, and drawings reside in the margins, further showcasing the talents of members.
