- Title:
- More Like a Camp-out
- Description:
- More Like a Camp-out is a short story written by Monica Dick, a Cowichan Tribal member, for the Reading and Writing Center at Malaspina University-College. The book recounts a summer vacation to Valdes Island, a very secluded area just off of Vancouver Island. Monica Dick, in charge of watching the children, takes them on what is supposed to be a short walk around the Island, returning in time for dinner, turns into a long night of wandering through the forest, lost. Dick recounts the feelings of fear and panic, but needing to stay calm to not scare the children. She draws upon her connection with the trees surrounding them, calling them her security blanket and connection with her ancestors. Dick and the children were eventually found by their family-led search parties.
