Title:
Free! Great Escapes from Slavery on the Underground Railroad
Description:
Free! Great Escapes from Slavery on the Underground Railroad is a collection of short stories, written by Lorene Cary, based on true events that follow different accounts of African-American men and women and their journey to freedom from the American Slave Trade. Cary wrote these stories to help expand and supplement the very few written records of the black experience during slavery, primarily due to purposefully low literacy rates. Using other records such as maps, eye-witness accounts recorded, sketches, and artifacts, Cary compiled these short stories with the goal that the stories will allow present day readers to actively imagine and engage with the lives and stories of these enslaved peoples. With each narrative an escape story, the individual themes include the pains of separation, the joys of reunion, and the hardships and sacrifices that came with the courage of each protagonist to seek freedom.
