Take Him Away Item Info

Title:
Take Him Away
Description:
Take Him Away is an autobiographical account of growing up in England during World War II. In it, Ron Piper shares his childhood memories, including exploring bombing raid sites and looting destroyed homes. Piper details how these earlier experiences shaped his adolescent life and his later “career” as a burglar. Piper only narrates his life up until the age of fifteen, when a judge sentenced him to prison for the first time. He shares that he has been in and out of correctional facilities and prisons for the intervening years between his first imprisonment and the time of writing the book at the age of 62. Take Him Away explores the social psychology behind crime and the failure of prisons to rehabilitate those inside. Piper concludes that punishment is not a cure for crime, and Take Him Away is ultimately an indictment of the prison system.
