Backyard Brighton Item Info
- Title:
- Backyard Brighton
- Description:
- Backyard Brighton is an assembly of personal stories and anecdotes that center around a collection of photographs of buildings demolished in Brighton during the 1930s. The photographs were originally taken for internal government use to demonstrate the “unfit” nature of the buildings. However, the Borough Council Environmental Health Department later made the photos publicly available and, as a result of advertisements in several local newspapers and radio shows, various people recognized the settings and offered memories or descriptions of the scenes. Writers reflect on the demolition of the neighborhood, the social connections between former inhabitants, and a unique sense of belonging evoked by residents. Several sketched blueprints of streets and buildings accompany the written works and photographs. Backyard Brighton is a reflection of the impact of larger socio economic systems and political agendas on individual lives and community ties.
