Back Street Brighton Item Info

Title:
Back Street Brighton
Description:
Back Street Brighton is a sequel to Backyard Brighton. Like Backyard Brighton, it is based on photographs commissioned by the Brighton Environmental Health Department as a part of a slum clearance initiative in the 1930s and 1950s. While Backyard Brighton focuses on the buildings that were demolished in the 1930s, this publication focuses on the buildings that were demolished in the second wave of clearances in the 1950s. It was published in 1989 as a record of the buildings (and by extension, the people and communities) who were forgotten in the portrayal of Brighton as a wealthy vacation destination. Locals who have memories related to the photographs share their personal experiences, highlighting the sentiment that Brighton remained a tight-knit community, despite facing poverty and the anxieties of World War II.
