This presentation copy to Graham Greene from his wife Vivien dated December 10 reads “I am still frantically hunting for something post-able & that you might not have already. Please take this as an IOU for a present which perhaps I can put in your hands when you are next over here, V”
English writer Daniel Defoe (1660–1731) was the author of Robinson Crusoe. One of its likeliest inspirations was the story of castaway Alexander Selkirk, who sailed with – and was later rescued by – William Dampier. Defoe’s second novel, Captain Singleton, included the story of the main character’s experiences as a pirate.
