And This Is Eleanor Early!

Early's Travels

“From the Arctic to the Congo” is a document among the television transcripts in the Early collection. It is undated. However, Early was frugal and typed it on the reverse side of several Elizabeth Arden company press releases, which refer to their 1967 cosmetic line. It is one of the best documents in Early’s own words, near the end of her life, of her early career.

Early collected photographs to illustrate her work. In one of these, she identified the “Carib King” (Kalinago Chief Thomas “Jolly” John) in the doorway of a dwelling in Salybia. Another is identified as “the matriarch” [Alexann Valmont] of the Caribs (Kalinago).

A scenic photo of one of Early’s favorite villages in Dominica was used later (with a few changes) as an illustration for the article “Island of Charms” in Country Home magazine in 1934.
