Welcome to the class projects page for Professor Thatcher’s Ancient Sicily course at Boston College, in Spring 2024!
Ancient Sicily, the crossroads of the Mediterranean, was a melting pot where Greeks, Romans, Carthaginians, and indigenous peoples came together to create something new. This course explores the history, art, literature, and culture of the Sicilian Greeks (and to some extent non-Greeks) from the 8th to 3rd centuries BCE.
From temples to theaters to sculpture, Sicilians created some of the best-preserved and most beautiful monuments and artwork in the ancient world. These monuments tell an important story about Sicily’s history, the interactions of its different peoples, and its place in the world. Check back throughout the semester for exciting updates from BC students on the monuments of Ancient Sicily!
