Burns Library\u2019s Irish Music Archives. This exciting slate of music-themed programs begins with an international symposium in September, followed in October by two presentations with live music.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.bc.edu\/Burns\/notai\">N\u00f3ta\u00ed\/Notes: Music and Ireland, a Research Symposium<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-436\" src=\"https:\/\/library.bc.edu\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/irish_01-231x300.png\" alt=\"Notes, Music and Ireland Research Symposium, Gasson Hall, BC, Saturday September 23\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.bc.edu\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/irish_01-231x300.png 231w, https:\/\/library.bc.edu\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/irish_01.png 648w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/>On September 23, a full-day symposium organized by the National University of Ireland Galway and Boston College will capitalize on music-related scholarship happening globally. The <a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.bc.edu\/burns\/notai\"><em>N\u00f3ta\u00ed\/Notes: Music and Ireland<\/em><\/a> \u00a0research symposium will begin at Boston College on Friday, September 22 with a reception at the Burns Library. Friday\u2019s reception will include a brief presentation by harp historian Nancy Hurrell and a musical demonstration on an early 19th-century Egan harp. Attendees will also have the opportunity to become acquainted with the Burns Library\u2019s extensive Irish Music Archives.<\/p>\n<p>The full-day program on Saturday September 23 will take place in the Gasson Hall Irish Room. Keynote speakers will include Helen O\u2019Shea (University of Melbourne) and M\u00e9abh N\u00ed Fhuarth\u00e1in (NUI Galway). Panel sessions will include presentations on Patrick Kavanagh\u2019s \u201cOn Raglan Road,\u201d the Willie Clancy Summer School, the piper Shaun O\u2019Nolan, and more. A brief performance of Irish traditional music will cap off the day\u2019s events.<\/p>\n<p>Findings from the <em>N\u00f3ta\u00ed\/Notes <\/em>symposium will be included in a special themed edition of <a href=\"https:\/\/bc-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com\/primo-explore\/fulldisplay?docid=ALMA-BC21328217500001021&amp;context=L&amp;vid=bclib_new&amp;search_scope=bcl&amp;tab=bcl_only&amp;lang=en_US\"><em>\u00c9ire-Ireland: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Irish Studies<\/em><\/a> in 2019. The symposium is cosponsored by Comhr\u00e1 Ceoil, Centre for Irish Studies at NUI Galway, together with the Boston College Libraries and Boston College Center for Irish Programs. Additional funding is provided by the Irish Research Council New Foundations program.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bc.edu\/alumni\/get_involved\/alumni_education.html\">Celebrating <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bc.edu\/alumni\/get_involved\/alumni_education.html\"><em>The S\u00e9amus Connolly Collection of Irish Music<\/em><\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On the first anniversary of <a href=\"https:\/\/connollymusiccollection.bc.edu\/\"><em>The S\u00e9amus Connolly Collection of Irish Music<\/em><\/a>, S\u00e9amus Connolly returns to campus on Thursday, October 12th to give a multimedia presentation with live performance at the Cadigan Alumni Center. A collaboration between Connolly and the Boston College Libraries, the Connolly Collection offers a window into the collaborative nature of digital scholarship projects. The evening will feature live music performances by S\u00e9amus Connolly on fiddle, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bc.edu\/publications\/chronicle\/FeaturesNewsTopstories\/2014\/news\/bc-s-noonan-earns-artist-fellowship.html\">Jimmy and S\u00e9amus Noonan<\/a> on flute and tin whistle, and <a href=\"http:\/\/mattandshannonheaton.com\/\">Shannon and Matt Heaton<\/a> on vocals, flute, and guitar.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-437\" src=\"https:\/\/library.bc.edu\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/irish_02-1024x717.png\" alt=\"The S\u00e9amus Connolly Collection of Irish Music\" width=\"840\" height=\"588\" srcset=\"https:\/\/library.bc.edu\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/irish_02-1024x717.png 1024w, https:\/\/library.bc.edu\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/irish_02-300x210.png 300w, https:\/\/library.bc.edu\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/irish_02-768x538.png 768w, https:\/\/library.bc.edu\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/irish_02-1200x840.png 1200w, https:\/\/library.bc.edu\/newsletter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/irish_02.png 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Connolly was a 2013 National Heritage Fellow and served as Sullivan Artist-in-Residence at BC from 2004 to 2015. His presentation will offer a behind-the-scenes look at how the digital collection came together, with stories and music selections that pay tribute to his musical mentors.<\/p>\n<p>The $20 registration fee includes the 6:00 p.m. reception and the 6:30 p.m. program. Lawlor and Joyce, who co-edited <a href=\"https:\/\/bc-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com\/primo-explore\/fulldisplay?docid=ALMA-BC21466158540001021&amp;context=L&amp;vid=bclib_new&amp;search_scope=bcl&amp;tab=bcl_only&amp;lang=en_US\"><em>Harp Studies<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/bc-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com\/primo-explore\/fulldisplay?docid=ALMA-BC21466158540001021&amp;context=L&amp;vid=bclib_new&amp;search_scope=bcl&amp;tab=bcl_only&amp;lang=en_US\"> (Four Courts Press, 2016)<\/a>, will draw on new research into the history and music of the Irish national instrument. In a presentation with live music, they will describe how the music of the Irish harp has been used and interpreted as a symbol of Ireland, and demonstrate how the harp has been reimagined through poetry, song, literature, and film.<\/p>\n<p>Singer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishworldacademy.ie\/joyce-sandra\/\">Sandra Joyce<\/a> directs the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick. Harpist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dkit.ie\/users\/helen-lawlor\">Helen Lawlor<\/a> lectures in music at Dundalk Institute of Technology.
