Stern, Robert A. M. (1939)
Subject
The topic of the resource
Stern, Robert A. M., born 1939
Description
An account of the resource
Born in New York City, Stern was educated at Columbia University and then Yale. He was a well-known author and teacher before starting his own practice. He believes in design as a process of cultural assimilation and that architecture is a communicative art. Most of his designs have been for private houses and apartments such as Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts (1979-83). Other famous commissions include the Norman Rockwell Museum, Stockbridge, Massachusetts (1987-92) and hotels for Euro-Disney in Marne-la Vall_e, France. He became a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects in 1984. In 2010, Stern designed Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, Salve Regina University, Newport, RI. This chapel houses the three large figurative windows by John La Farge that were originally in a private chapel in the home of the Caldwell sisters of Newport, and later in a convent in Fall River, MA.
