I can&#8217;t tell you why your friend developed this phobia, but as with other phobias, treatment varies for each person. Gradually increasing exposure in a controlled manner is often the recommended treatment. I imagine Fr. Leahy does not have time to help with that process, so perhaps cognitive behavioral therapy would be the better approach.
